Table of contents
If you want one image generator for most jobs in 2026, use ChatGPT's built-in image tool, the thing that replaced DALL-E. It follows long prompts closely, renders text well, lets you edit by just describing the change, and it's free to try inside an app you probably already have open.
That doesn't make it the best at everything. Midjourney still makes the most striking, art-directed images, the ones that look like a film still or an illustrator's portfolio piece. Ideogram is the specialist for anything built around words: posters, thumbnails, logo drafts, social graphics. It's also cheap, and its newest model is open-weight.
One housekeeping note before we go further: DALL-E itself is gone. People still search for it by name, so it's in our title, but what you're really comparing today is ChatGPT Images. Here's the whole picture as of September 2026.
Quick verdict
Our pick
ChatGPT Images (DALL-E successor)
4.6Best for: Most people: accurate prompts, readable text and chat-based editing ยท Free with limits; ChatGPT Plus $20/mo; API billed per token
ChatGPT Images (DALL-E's successor) is our overall pick. It has the best mix of prompt accuracy, text rendering, conversational editing and free access, and the same models are available through OpenAI's API.
Pick Midjourney if the look matters more than precision: concept art, mood boards, editorial illustration, cinematic stills.
Pick Ideogram if your image has to carry a headline, a brand name or a layout. It's also the best value per image on paid plans.
Wait, what happened to DALL-E?
OpenAI switched ChatGPT from DALL-E 3 to a new image model built into GPT-4o in March 2025, later branded GPT Image. The old models hung on in the API for a while, but OpenAI shut down DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3 on May 12, 2026.
What's running now:
- ChatGPT Images 2.0, powered by gpt-image-2, launched April 21, 2026. OpenAI pitched it on better layouts, stronger text rendering in multiple languages, and output up to 2K.
- ChatGPT Images 2.5 arrived September 8, 2026, with sharper detail, more consistent multi-step edits, a Sketch tool, poster templates and up to 50% lower latency than 2.0. In the API it comes in two versions: Flare (fast) and Sunburst (more precise).
So when someone asks "is DALL-E good?", the honest answer is that DALL-E's weaknesses (garbled text, loose prompt following) mostly belong to history. Its successor is a different, much stronger tool.
The current versions at a glance
Midjourney moved to the V8 family this year. V8 opened in alpha in March, and V8.1 became the default on June 11, 2026, with better prompt adherence, better text, and an HD mode that renders at "twice the size and 4x the resolution of V7 images." V8.2 followed on July 24, focused on aesthetics and personalization, and Midjourney's August changelog treats it as the active model. A new V8.2 edit model went into public testing on August 27.
Ideogram released Ideogram 4.0 on June 3, 2026. It's a 9.3-billion-parameter open-weight model with native 2K output, bounding-box layout control and structured JSON prompting. Ideogram 3.0 is still available in the app and costs fewer credits per image.
Pricing and free access (September 2026)
| Midjourney | ChatGPT Images | Ideogram | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free option | None (no free trial since 2023) | Yes, on ChatGPT Free, limits not published | 10 slow credits a week, images public |
| Entry paid plan | Basic, $10/mo | ChatGPT Plus, $20/mo | Plus, $20/mo ($15/mo yearly) |
| Mid tier | Standard $30, Pro $60 | Pro and Business plans | Pro, $60/mo ($42/mo yearly) |
| Top tier | Mega, $120/mo | Enterprise | Team and Enterprise |
| Private images | Pro and Mega only (Stealth Mode) | Private by default | Paid plans only |
Midjourney figures come from eesel's breakdown of Midjourney's plans, which also notes the 20% annual discount and that fast GPU hours don't roll over. Ideogram's come from eesel's Ideogram pricing guide: Plus includes 1,000 priority credits a month, and Pro includes 3,500.
A few things the headline prices hide:
- Midjourney charges in GPU time, not images. Basic's roughly 3.3 fast hours go quickly if you use HD mode or video. Standard adds unlimited Relax mode for images, which is why it's the plan most regulars end up on.
- Ideogram's credits vary by model. An image on Ideogram 3.0 Default costs 1 credit; Ideogram 4.0 costs 2 to 6 depending on quality, per eesel. So 1,000 Plus credits means about 1,000 images on 3.0 but far fewer on 4.0 at top quality. Unused priority credits expire each cycle.
- ChatGPT doesn't publish a fixed image cap. OpenAI's help center says image generation on the free tier has its own rate limits, separate from text, and they shift with demand. Images with thinking (where the model reasons, researches and plans before drawing) is reserved for paid plans. Our ChatGPT Free vs Plus comparison covers the rest of what Plus gets you.

A note on the checkmarks: ChatGPT can extend an image if you ask it to, but there's no dedicated outpainting tool like Midjourney's. And Ideogram's bounding-box control belongs to the 4.0 model; Magic Fill, its inpainting tool, works with the 2.0 and 3.0 models.
Same prompt, three tools
Here's an example prompt we'd use to see where each tool shines. These are illustrative prompts, not results. Run them yourself; that's the fastest way to decide.
A rainy Tokyo side street at night, a small ramen shop with a glowing
red sign that reads "MIDNIGHT NOODLES", steam rising from the doorway,
a woman in a yellow raincoat holding a clear umbrella, shot on 35mm film,
shallow depth of field, 3:2How we'd adapt it for each tool:
- Midjourney: add
--ar 3:2 --hdand consider a style reference or moodboard. Expect the most atmospheric result. The sign text is the part most likely to need a retry. - ChatGPT Images: paste it as is. Then refine in plain English: "make the sign neon pink, keep everything else the same." That follow-up edit is where ChatGPT pulls ahead.
- Ideogram: leave the words in quotes so Ideogram treats them as text to render, and try Ideogram 4.0 for layout. If you want the sign in a specific spot, 4.0's structured prompts let you place it.
Want better results from any of the three? The techniques in our prompt-writing guide apply to image prompts too.
Image quality: artistic vs photoreal
Midjourney is still the one with taste. Its defaults lean cinematic: rich color, dramatic light, deliberate composition. V8.2 was explicitly tuned to make images "more creative, bold, sophisticated, edgy and fresh," and its personalization learns your preferences from the images you rate. For concept art, album covers, fantasy scenes or editorial illustration, it's the tool designers keep coming back to.
ChatGPT Images is the more literal one. It's excellent at photoreal product shots, infographics, diagrams and scenes with many specific elements. OpenAI says gpt-image-2 debuted at #1 on the Image Arena text-to-image leaderboard, and Images 2.5 adds more natural lighting and texture. What you give up is a signature style: left alone, its images can look clean but a bit plain.
Ideogram sits in between. Ideogram 4.0 is aimed at design work: 2K output, color palette control (up to 16 hex colors) and precise placement. According to The Decoder's coverage, benchmark rankings put it ahead of Midjourney V8 but behind GPT Image 2 and Google's Nano Banana Pro, and first among open-weight models.
Text in images
This used to be the easy way to tell the tools apart. It's closer now, but the order hasn't changed.
- Ideogram built its reputation on text, and 4.0 reports a 0.97 score on the X-Omni English OCR benchmark, along with multilingual text and multiple fonts in one image.
- ChatGPT Images is right there with it. OpenAI's 2.0 release focused on multilingual text and text-heavy visuals like posters, charts and menus.
- Midjourney improved a lot with V8.1, which it says "renders text better than ever," but it's still the one where you're most likely to reroll for a misspelled sign.
For a thumbnail with a big headline, go with Ideogram or ChatGPT. Our YouTube thumbnail guide and AI logo guide walk through those workflows.
Prompt adherence
ChatGPT wins. It's built on a language model, so it handles long, specific instructions: five objects, their colors, where they go, what the text says. With thinking enabled on paid plans, it can plan a complex layout before drawing.
Ideogram 4.0 is a close second, and for structured layouts it can be even more exact thanks to bounding boxes and JSON prompts. Midjourney V8 follows prompts far better than older versions, but it still takes creative liberties. Sometimes that's the point.
Editing and consistency
Midjourney
4.5- Pricing
- No free plan; from $10/mo (Basic) to $120/mo (Mega), 20% off yearly
- Best for
- Artistic, cinematic and stylized images with a strong look
Midjourney's editing got a big upgrade with the V8.2 edit model: you can edit with plain-language instructions, add up to four reference images, inpaint and outpaint. It replaces the older Omni Reference approach. A September update says targeted edits now change only the pixels you select. Add style references, moodboards, personalization and live style previews, and it has the deepest toolkit for keeping a consistent look across a series. There's also image-to-video if you want motion.
ChatGPT Images (DALL-E successor) Our pick
4.6- Pricing
- Free with limits; ChatGPT Plus $20/mo; API billed per token
- Best for
- Most people: accurate prompts, readable text and chat-based editing
ChatGPT's editing is conversational. Upload a photo or keep working on a generation and say what to change. Images 2.5 claims more consistent edits across multiple revisions, better preservation of people in reference photos, comment-based edits and a Sketch tool for drawing what you mean. It's the easiest editing of the three for non-designers. For bulk or precise photo retouching, though, a dedicated tool may serve you better; see our roundup of AI tools for editing product photos.
Ideogram
4.3- Pricing
- Free (10 slow credits/week); Plus $20/mo; Pro $60/mo
- Best for
- Posters, logos, social graphics and anything built around text
Ideogram offers Magic Fill for inpainting, Canvas for extending and compositing, character and style references, and utility apps like Background Remover, Ad Resizer and Object Remover. Ideogram says the next 4.0 release will output transparent layers and editable text directly, which would make it much more useful for real design files.
Resolution and speed
- Midjourney V8.1 generates in about 4 seconds at standard definition and 12 seconds in HD, per Midjourney. HD is native 2K.
- ChatGPT Images goes up to 2K, and the API now supports arbitrary resolutions. OpenAI claims 2.5 is up to 50% faster than 2.0 but doesn't publish exact generation times. Images with thinking is slower by design.
- Ideogram 4.0 supports 256 to 2048 pixels per side, including ultrawide and phone-wallpaper shapes. Speed depends on the quality tier and whether you're using priority or slow credits; Ideogram doesn't publish times.
Commercial rights and content policies
Midjourney: Paid subscribers own their images to the extent the law allows, but companies with more than $1 million a year in revenue must be on Pro or Mega. Below Pro, your images appear in the public gallery, which matters for client work. Midjourney is also being sued by Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. Discovery over copyrighted characters, so avoid prompts that reproduce famous IP.
ChatGPT Images: OpenAI's terms give you ownership of what you generate, on free and paid plans. Its content rules are the strictest of the three, particularly around real people and imitating specific artists, so expect more refusals.
Ideogram: Paid plans give you private generation; free images are public and can't be deleted. If you want to self-host Ideogram 4.0's open weights, note that commercial use of those weights requires a paid license.
API access
If you're building something, this narrows fast.
- OpenAI has the most mature API. gpt-image-2 supports generation and editing with inpainting. Pricing is per token: $5 per million text input tokens, $8 per million image input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, with the Batch API at half price. gpt-image-2.5 costs the same.
- Ideogram sells API access per image: about $0.03 (Turbo), $0.06 (Default) or $0.10 (Quality) on 4.0, with no subscription needed. You can also download the weights.
- Midjourney has no official public API. Third-party services that resell access exist, but they aren't Midjourney products, and you're taking on that risk yourself.
Which one should you pick?
- Most people, and anyone starting out: ChatGPT Images. Free to try, forgiving with prompts, and editing is just a conversation.
- Artists, illustrators and creative directors: Midjourney Standard ($30/mo). Relax mode plus style references is the best creative playground available.
- Marketers, small businesses and creators making graphics: Ideogram Plus. Reliable text, layout control and low cost per image.
- Developers: OpenAI's API for general use, Ideogram's for typography-heavy output or if you need open weights.
- Agencies doing client work: Midjourney Pro for Stealth Mode and the $1M-revenue rule, plus ChatGPT or Ideogram for anything with text.
The bottom line
ChatGPT Images is the best image generator for most people in 2026, and it's what "DALL-E" means now. Midjourney is still the one to beat on pure visual quality and style, and it's worth $30 a month if images are your craft. Ideogram is the practical choice for text-heavy design work and the best value per image. If you can afford two, ChatGPT plus Midjourney covers almost everything.
Frequently asked questions
Is DALL-E still available in 2026?
No. ChatGPT stopped using DALL-E 3 in March 2025, and OpenAI shut down DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3 in the API on May 12, 2026. Its replacement is GPT Image, which powers ChatGPT Images. The current version is Images 2.5.
Is Midjourney free?
No. Midjourney hasn't offered a free trial since 2023. The cheapest plan is Basic at $10 a month, or $8 a month billed yearly.
Which AI image generator is best at text?
Ideogram and ChatGPT Images are both excellent and close to each other. Ideogram 4.0 adds layout control that helps with posters and logos. Midjourney V8 is much better than earlier versions but still the least reliable of the three for exact wording.
Can I use Midjourney, ChatGPT or Ideogram images commercially?
Generally yes. Midjourney's paid plans allow commercial use, but companies earning over $1 million a year need Pro or Mega. OpenAI's terms give you ownership of your outputs. Ideogram allows commercial use, though free-plan images are public, and self-hosting its open weights commercially requires a license.
What's the cheapest way to get good AI images?
Start with ChatGPT's free tier and Ideogram's free weekly credits. If you need volume, Ideogram Plus at $15 a month billed yearly works out to roughly 1,000 images on Ideogram 3.0.
